K-Lab Seeking Subjects

Research participants are needed for biomechanics studies at the Michael W. Krzyzewski Human Performance Laboratory (K-Lab). Our research studies are conducted in our lab facility as well as several sports facilities on Duke University's campus.

What do the experiments study?

Our experiments investigate many topics in biomechanics, including athletic performance, and injury prevention. We study the mechanism of sports injuries such as hamstring pulls, fifth metatarsal fractures and ACL tears, progression and treatment of osteoarthritis, the effects of particular footwear on performance during cleated sports, and many other topics.

What happens during the experiments?

When you come in for a study, you will begin by meeting an experimenter at the K-Lab. The experimenter will explain the procedures of the study and will answer any questions that you may have. The experimenter will discuss consent and screening forms with you, to ensure both that you understand the study and that you can safely participate.
Most studies last between 1 and 2 hours. Depending on the experiment, you will wear reflective markers for our Motion Analysis System, EMG electrodes, or insoles which measure in shoe pressure. As in all research at Duke, you will be free to stop participating in the study at any time you choose. At the end of the session, the experimenters will explain the procedures and goals of the study to you, and will answer any questions that you have about the study.

Which studies are currently recruiting subjects?

Foot and Ankle Studies

1) Carbon Fiber Shank

We are looking for male subjects between the ages 18-30 who are physically active at least 3 times a week for an hour or longer. With no lower extremity injury in the past 6 months, no history of a metatarsal stress fracture, and no foot and ankle surgery in the past 2 years.

Shoe Design Studies

1) Unanticipated Cutting

We are looking for male and female subjects who are between the ages of 18-35 who are physically active at least 3 times a week for an hour or longer and have previously played a cleated sport. You must have no history of a lower extremity injury in the past 6 months, and no lower extremity surgery in the past 2 years.

Hamstring Studies

Currently not recruiting subjects for any hamstring studies

Therapeutic Intervention Studies

1) Hip Control Subjects

We are looking for male and female participants between the ages of 40-70 who have no history of a lower extremity injury in the past 6 months, no history of a hip replacement or resurfacing, no known hip or knee osteoarthritis and no lower extremity surgery in the past 2 years.
